As mentioned in the introductory paragraphs Denis was awarded a Silver Gilt Medal for his garden at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show and this is the colour sketch of the proposed design which Denis submitted to the Royal Horticultural Society prior to the show. The garden called 'From Winters Slumber' was designed around a piece of sculpture called Winter, one of four pieces for a private commission of the four seasons by sculptor John Hawkwood. The garden featured an aluminium 'stream' to create the feel of frozen water which culminated in a small 'spring' with melted wax floating on the surface to give the effect of floating ice signifying that the ice was melting and spring was just round the corner. The planting in the main part of the sculpture was designed using cool blues greens and whites with warmer shades closer to the area around the spring. The photographs show the garden from various angles as well as the beautiful prostrate figure of 'Winter' herself at the head of the stream. |
